The first American settlers arrived from New York and New England around 1830, and by 1837 the settlement was busy enough to be incorporated as a village. Five years later it was designated the seat of Branch County, and finally incorporated as a city in 1861.
The Tibbets Opera House—Michigan’s second-oldest—followed roughly twenty years later. You probably know it today as a center for performances of all kinds, an art gallery, and an historic gathering place for the community at large.
