Gay San Francisco

Ah, San Francisco, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Where else in this country can you find old character-filled Victorian homes neatly stacked in rows along hills? Or watch a blanket of fog billow over those same hills? Or find the beach, the woods, and an art warehouse district all within a few miles?

San Francisco is a city that has endured many transitions in its colorful history - and it’s in the midst of a wild one at the moment with Silicon Valley transforming it from the inside out. The culture war is alive and kicking on every damn street corner here. You can practically taste the tension in the air, and it's thrilling to witness. For now, some gems remain, so if you want that old SF charm like the one Tony Bennett sang about, get here fast.

Weather

San Francisco is overcast and windy pretty much all of the time, and you need a jacket pretty much all of the time. That said, there are pockets of it that have a lot more sun than others (no, not the coast). The summers can be just as cold as the winters, but if you head to the East Bay or Marin, the weather is much milder. It's not LA, so do pack a jacket, but also don't let 55 degrees be an excuse to stay inside.

The Neighborhoods and the Gay-borhood

San Francisco is only seven miles by seven miles. A lot of it has become Uber-modern, and lost the old charm; however, many special places remain if you look hard enough. The thing to remember when you're visiting is this: San Francisco, stripped away of all the artisanal bullshit, is a view city and nature city. We have tall hills, giant parks, and beaches.

It’s most-visited and most-discussed neighborhoods include: Lower Haight, Mission, Dogpatch, Sunset, Bernal Heights, Castro, Noe Valley, North Beach, SoMa, FiDi, and, well, if you’re a tourist, the Embarcadero. The Castro is the iconic gay neighborhood, which although slightly less gay than it used to be, is nevertheless still THE CASTRO - take it or leave it (we say just enjoy it for what it is!).

Bay Area restaurants have never been shinier, more palatable, or more Instagrammable. Yes, because it’s the Bay Area, you'll wait and you'll spend spend way more than you wanted to, but variety is the spice of life, and the multi-cultural palette of restaurants is astounding.

Jammed right in between the nicest part of the Mission and the nicest part of the Castro, Dolores Park is the place to watch all the guys lying out on the “gay shelf” (upper corner) in what is really the sunniest part of the city (you’ll see plenty of weed being sold as well). Baker beach is technically a nude beach, but you really want to stroll up the coast and head down the stairs to Marshall’s beach - which is the gay nude beach.

San Francisco’s LGBTQ Legacy

San Francisco the historical powerhouse of LGBTQ culture in the United States. This is the city that gave birth to the rainbow flag, where the country's first openly gay elected official (Harvey Milk) made history. And lest we forget, it's the first place in the country where gay marriage was legalized.

While there are tons of gay bars in San Francisco, its landscape has changed over the decades. There is only one gay bar left in the Tenderloin, the neighborhood where the first transgender riot in U.S. history took place. Polk Street is a strip where the first SF Pride Parade went down in 1972. This magical street was once home to 65 gay bars, peep shows, bathhouses, and hotels. Now only one gay bar remains.

A Shifting Culture

There's been a large exodus from SF’s LGBTQ+ spaces lately (specially since the covid pandemic), but many queer folk believe that just because mainstream acceptance of LGBTQ+ lifestyles and cultures has grown, doesn't mean these spaces aren't still vital and necessary. Safe havens of belonging are always, always needed.

SF is still grateful to have two neighborhoods where gay bars draw in the crowds: the Castro and SoMa. You can pretty much find whatever you fancy: fabulous drag queens, dance parties, latex, leather, karaoke, kink, and even sports. At these only-in-SF fetish curated spaces, genders, and sexual orientations of all stripes are welcome.

SF Pride

San Francisco's Pride celebrations are truly one of a kind, and 2022 parade proved just that. With the banner of "Love Will Keep Us Together," the 52nd year of Pride saw the return of the city's legendary parade and many other favorites. Those who visited were able to freely express themselves within the city's 49 square miles feel the love, equality, and freedom of expression, in its uniquely irreverent way.

San Francisco Bay Area - you simply have to be here to feel it.
