The benefit of using engineered flooring is the fact that it may be installed directly on concrete (because you don't need to nail it when installing) or beneath the grade (because moisture doesn't trouble it the same way as real wood). The wood-like appearance is due to thin veneers of the selected wood that are then pressed onto a variety of different layers of the substrate. In the final analysis, it costs approximately the same as solid wood flooring, and the sole benefit (in my view) is that it can "float" the flooring on concrete.
